Hetty Branderhorst
I want my work to spark a sense of freedom
No title. Strange? No. Hetty Branderhorst does it for a reason. She wants to give her viewer the space to interpret for themselves. “I want my work to spark a sense of freedom. People should feel that freedom. That’s why I do not give my work a title.” Freedom is a central theme in Hetty’s work; her work should be experienced as well as being seen. And many of her works can be hung vertically and horizontally.
Nature plays a large part of her inspiration. As she, herself, says: “Nature is a driving force in my search for harmony.” That is what painting means to her: painting is creating, searching for balance and harmony, playing with shapes and colours, being moved.
Every painting is founded on oil paint on linen. “I love the purity of oil paint. Sometimes thick, sometimes thinly spread. I use both my brush and my palette knife.Sometimes I enhance coarse structures by using wood and paper. The result is vivid paintings with supple, organic shapes which always have moevment in them.
